Post-Extraction Care
Aftercare following tooth extraction is crucial for promoting healing and preventing complications. At Lake Myrtle Dental, we provide comprehensive guidance for post-extraction care to ensure optimal recovery. Here are some general aftercare instructions:
- Bite on Gauze: Immediately after extraction, gently bite down on clean gauze placed over the extraction site to help control bleeding and promote blood clot formation. Replace the gauze as needed until bleeding stops.
- Apply Ice Packs: To reduce swelling and discomfort, apply an ice pack to the outside of your face in the affected area for 10-20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours after extraction.
- Take Prescribed Medications: Follow any prescribed medications as directed by your dentist, such as pain relievers or antibiotics, to manage pain and prevent infection.
- Rest and Avoid Strenuous Activity: Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 24 hours after extraction to promote healing and minimize the risk of bleeding or complications.
- Eat Soft Foods: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days after extraction, gradually reintroducing solid foods as tolerated. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that may irritate the extraction site.
- Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue to brush and floss your teeth gently, taking care to avoid the extraction site. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to help keep the area clean and reduce inflammation.
- Avoid Smoking and Drinking through a Straw: Refrain from smoking and drinking through a straw for at least 24 hours after extraction, as these activities can dislodge blood clots and delay healing.
- Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Be sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist to monitor healing progress and address any concerns.
